Easter in Rio

The Easter basket and egg hunts that are traditions in the US are nowhere to be seen here in Brazil. Neither is the gigantic assortment of candy. Here the kids all receive a huge chocolate egg that is hollow and filled with either more chocolate or toys similar to what you would find in a happy meal.

Of course we wanted to keep our US traditions so the Easter bunny imported some of our favorite candy from the US. However, we felt that since we are supposed to be immersing ourselves into Brazilian culture, we had to experiment with the chocolate egg. After reading a lot of labels, the Easter bunny was actually able to find Grace a dairy/egg/nut free chocolate egg (this was no small task). We ended up with a lot of candy, but Easter only comes once a year.
















Like all holidays (and weekends and any other day they possibly can) most cariocas hit the beach on Easter. Last year I must admit, we spent a good part of the afternoon at the pool. Unfortunately, this year Grace was getting over a bacterial infection which had us quarantined to the house for a week (I’ll also use that as my excuse for not posting last week). I am happy to say she has fully recovered and returned to school today.
