Salvador

We were excited to see the city of Salvador, which is in the north of Brazil. Salvador was the first capital of Brazil. The majority of people there are of African ancestry, so the culture is completely different from Rio, where the majority of people are of Portuguese or Italian ancestry.



Salvador is located 13' from the Equator, so you can imagine how hot it was there! The buildings definitely showed how rough the climate is. I imagine things don't look new there for long.


While in Salvador, we visited the church with the most goldleaf in Brazil. It is one of those things you have to see to believe, the photos just don't do it justice. Sitting there in that church was incredible.





I have to admit, I wasn't looking forward to the "Bahian" food. This region is known for it's mocquecas, or fish stews. We had tried some here in Rio, and we weren't the biggest fans. But we had to try it while we were there, and we were really glad we did. It almost had the flavor of a yellow curry, something we don't get much of here in Brazil.



We had a great day in Salvador and felt like we saw all we needed to see in one day. We were ready to move on and hopefully get away from the extreme heat. Unfortunately, this is summer in Brazil and there really is no escape from the heat.
